10/9/1940: Born on this day, John Winston Lennon, Beatles/Solo singer, songwriter, guitarist. In 1990 Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ was played simultaneously in 130 countries to commemorate what would’ve been Lennon’s 50th birthday. He was shot dead in New York by Mark Chapman on 8th December 1980. At age 15, Lennon formed the skiffle group, the Quarrymen. Named after Quarry Bank High School, the group was established by him in September 1956. By the summer of 1957, the Quarrymen played a “spirited set of songs” made up of half skiffle and half rock’n roll. Lennon first met Paul McCartney at the Quarrymen’s second performance after which he asked McCartney to join the band.
