INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY: Brush up on your pirate lingo or be prepared to walk the plank! Photo:

Ahoy! It’s here again – International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Started in 1995 by two Oregon friends as an inside joke, the “holiday” gained national recognition in 2002 when it caught the attention of syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry. It is “celebrated” by seadogs and scurvy mates everywhere on Sept. 19.

While it’s mostly an unofficial holiday, it has gotten some street cred in at least one state: state of Michigan even voted to officially recognize the holiday, although the gesture is largely symbolic.

Those who dare to venture into the unchartered territory of their local Krispy Kreme can be rewarded with free donuts for talking or dressing like a pirate. The national chain has upped the ante by rewarding those in costume with a free dozen.
